Living Willow Portal and Sanctuary Spaces - Preparing the Grounds

Dear Community,

We’re excited to invite you to an exceptional daylong work on the living willow portal pathway and sanctuary spaces at SUNY ESF’s Tully Field Station. This event marks the beginning of an evolving project that will continue to take root around the Spring Equinox, and we’d love for you to help shape this meaningful, community-crafted environmental art portal and sanctuary!

Event Details:

  • Date: Friday, September 20th, 10 am - Sunset

  • Location: SUNY ESF Soccer Field, Tully Field Station, on Onondaga Land

  • Special Event: The soccer team will arrive around 5 pm to join the team. There will be delicious pizza for all courtesy of the Athletics department!

Please Click Here to RSVP or to Join the Listseve for future Invites and Info

What We’re Building:

Led by Earth-based artist Aresh Javadi of AreshEarth, we'll be working on the living willow portal pathway, which is nearing completion. This weekend's focus is on preparing the space and experimenting with ideas that will set the stage for the Spring Equinox. At that time, we’ll weave together the portal pathway into an arch and begin creating the living willow installation sanctuary spaces. These spaces are envisioned as places of reflection, connection, and peace for the community.

As we work together to build these natural art installations, we want to remain mindful that we are on unceded Onondaga land. We have extended an invitation to the Onondaga Nation to participate in any way they deem fit, as we seek to honor Haudenosaunee principles of peace, stewardship of the Earth, and community care in this collaborative project.

We welcome all students, staff, and community members—whether you have experience in weaving and planting or are simply eager to participate. Your energy and creativity are essential to shaping these willow structures and the sanctuaries they will become.

You’ll be working alongside:

  • Dan Ramin, ESF Athletics Coordinator and Soccer Coach

  • Tim Volk, ESF Professor and Willow Expert

  • Karl Hallen, ESF Tully Field Station Coordinator

Come join us on Friday to contribute to the continued creation of this special space that reflects both community and care for the Earth. This is a powerful opportunity to be part of something that will grow and flourish for generations to come.
